It takes a lot of experience for a girl to kiss like a beginner.

books, movies and tv
the chimney guy is here cleaning both chimneys and the "nice" car is being towed to the body shop. and I am thinking  of recent films we have seen, books I have read and a new (old) tv show we finally discovered.

The films are Kurosawa- one of the greatest directors of all time. we just saw the Bad Sleep well. a taut and dark treatment of corporate corruption in post war Japan. The super brilliant hunk Toshiro Mifune plays a restrained tortured and obsessed soul who moves the film from a sad and awkward wedding to a startling --- no that can't be type ending.

Then I started two books, the second part  of the Cairo trilogy by Mafouz- this one is pace of desire and the the protagonists of the first novel are aging and the  new generation coming into their own. It's a detailed and amazing look at Egypt before independence and the relationship among family members in an upper class family.

The TV thing is funny because we resist wildly popular shows until so many people mention it that we cave in. this was the case with Seinfeld,  sex and the city, Six feet under, and The Sopranos. Only deadwood and Curb your enthusiasm did we jump right into on our own. So this week we finally check out Mad Men and were blown away. My husband remembers more about 1960 than I do (he is sooooooooooooo much older than I)
And he claims they got everything right on. and all the smoking and drinking. and the repressed emotion among the women.
