If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

last night we saw one of the last remaining alive icons of modern dance. Lar Lubovitch. His company came to Portland and as was expected was sublime. Lar is up there with Paul Taylor, Alwin Nikolai, Martha Graham,  and Twyla Tharp as a genius who has created a unique language of dance which is emulated by others.

His dancers move impeccably with a control that is awesome and the fluidity of movement that makes you wonder if they are connected by one large invisible ribbon and water. Concerto for Men in Ruins was a long piece but devastatingly beautiful and reminds us in a time when we have already long ago acknowledged how difficult being a woman is that the lot of men in our society can also be oppressive. violence and confusion and moving through careers like puppets it also tells us that men are at their best when the find their true souls and work together to make beauty. Be is dance or music or buildings, countries  or a family. It's profound and funny and deeply sad.

Modern dance -without a doubt -is my most favorite performing art. just the music and the movement. no words to get in the way and it's just you, your emotions, dream images and wonder. All and all it was a damn good night.
